Goodbye Purple Room...

When we bought our place, it was in disrepair. Many of the color choices the previous owners either chose for carpet or paint were questionable at best. The more projects I take on the more I discover old wall paper just painted over without removing or priming.

One particularly bad room was painted purple. I have nothing wrong with the color purple, I'm just not so keen on bright purple walls in a room with dark green carpet and low light levels. And I'm really not a fan of horribly painted purple. Up until now, we've just used it as a store room but eventually, it'll be a workout room or an office depending on our needs.

Today, I decided to clean up that room because the cats have been up to no good in there and I wanted to see what I'd unearth by cleaning it up. Well, as I was cleaning it out, I decided that because it was partially empty, I would just go ahead and start painting it! So the first coat is up. It looks pretty bad right now, but anything is better than that ugly purple! Even if it is a buttery shade of white that my parents gave me (they gave us like 4 gallons of high quality paint they had used in their house).

There are still purple parts though: prior owners did not believe in taping off the trim so it's all purple in places AND the baseboards were completely painted purple... *UGH! So that'll be next up on the agenda after the room is fully painted.

Our roof still leaks.

Last year about this time we discovered our dear roof leaks in the kitchen. This prompted the great road trip (a.k.a. When life gives you lemons; say f*ck you, lemons, we're going to New York) of 2009.... well the leaking roof was the straw that broke the camel's back because it was right after I found out I would not have a job at the end of May. Well my dad came out and looked at our roof and maintained it was because the flashing between our roof and our neighbors house was not done right/absent so that was causing the leak. So he fixed it and we went on our merry little way.

Fast forward to 4am this morning mid thunderstorm/torrential downpour: the leak has returned. "good morning to me"/say it with me: *ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!*

This tells me that

1. the problem is bigger than we think
2. the owners prior to the previous owners either did it themselves or hired the cheapest/crappiest roofer possible and the result is crappy workmanship -- hence the absence of proper flashing that has already been addressed..

Either way, I really hope it's just more flashing issues around vents and not a whole roof problem that necessitates putting on a new roof. Or I really will have to say good bye to the delusion that I'll have a proper wedding.....

Having to fix the prior owner's mistakes.

It's really annoying. What now, you ask? Well on top of finding out that most of our main level and bathrooms had been covered in wallpaper. Instead of taking the time to properly remove it and the glue, the morons before us only removed parts of it, gave up and painted over it.....

Now I discover, as we're trying to make this place look nice, that the trim around the window has tape residue all over it that will not come off without a major fight. It took me five minutes to do one 6" section and it's still sticky.

Awesome.
